Augusta
Augusta, the seat of justice of Perry County, is situated on the Pascagoula
River north of the center of the county, and is a good local trading point.
The population is one hundred and twenty-five.
Hattiesburgh
Hattiesburgh, with a population of six hundred and fifty, is the only
important town in Perry County. Perry lodge, Enon lodge and Hattiesburg
lodge and chapter (at Hattiesburgh) are the Masonic bodies of Perry County.
Crescent lodge No. 47, Knights of Pythias, at Hattiesburgh, is the only
Pythian lodge. There was one lodge of Grangers of quite a membership which
formerly existed; there are several lodges of the Farmers' Alliance, and
there was formerly a lodge of the K. of L.
The only pretentious schools in Perry County are at Hattiesburgh, Augusta and Central. The Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic denominations are all represented, the Baptist and Methodists having the larger memberships, the Presbyterian churches numbering two and the Catholic one.
